Danby, Hope: IN CHARMING PEKING. A Diary of Seven Days Spent in the Old Chinese Capital. N.p. (Peking?) 1930. 4, 44 pp. 12 tipped-in hand-coloured plates of varying sizes.  24x19 cm. Cloth.

A charming work (the title does not exaggerate) relating a week's visit to Peking by Hope Danby (author of 'Garden of Perfect Brightness') and companion, presumably Gladys Mary Havers who did the colour illustrations. The work was limited to an edition of 300 copies and the 12 tipped-in plates (of varying sizes) are hand-coloured and quite delightful, showing the major sights of the capital. The introduction by L. C. Arlington (author of 'In Search of Old Peking') states 'The book is invaluable for tourists who stay only a few days in Peking. By following the itinerary, they will learn more about this ancient and unique city than by turning to one of the more complete books.' Bound in yellow patterned silk and enhanced by a silk string with ceramic bead and tassels. Wear and loss to spine. Text block starting to split. Priced accordingly.
