An original Civil War letter dated 1861. In one area it looks like it says,..........I will now take up my pen to write you since all our worst fears are more than....concerning the imoral and un christian character of the people of the southern states and the inevatable prospect of an entire suspension of business at the north I do not know how long the Merimack....will but do not think long............I would go with all my heart but I hope and trust they will not need me for any such purpose but it is hoping against hope for if it was true that Jeff Davis was within 24 hours of Washington last night thare has probably been fighting thare before now and today noon a dispatch came that the Baltimoreans were fighting among themselves and great fears are entertained that maryland will secede if she does it will be the "unkindest cut of all" but we can do nothing but pray................thare are flags waving from every publick building and the shops have red white and blue in every variety of shade intertwining and hanging in gracefule folds over the fronts of the shops.......................

The cover has a patriotic image of an American flag.
