Portrait of Levi-Montalcini inspired by a photograph by Manuela Fabbri. In the background on the right you can see a microscope with a horseshoe-shaped base. This served as a lucky charm for the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1986 and was taken from a medal designed by his brother, the Italian scientist Gino Levi-Montalcini. Above you can see the issue “RITA LEVI-MONTALCINI” and on the left the “RI” – acronym for the Italian Republic and the “R” for the Roman mint. Rita Levi-Montalcini * 22. April 1909 in Turin, Italy; † 30. December 2012 in Rome was an Italian doctor and neurobiologist. She discovered the body's own growth factors responsible for cell growth and, together with STANLEY Cohen, was awarded the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research and the Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology in 1986. In 2001, she became the second woman to be appointed senator for life in Italy.
