1964 Fender Showman Tube

 Amp Head Model AB 763

Rough Blonde Tolex

Electric Guitar / Bass Amplifier Head

Made in USA

What we have here is another unusual rare bird. I purchased this amplifier back in the mid 80’s around the same time I purchased another Showman from another seller. I noticed that these two Showman amplifier’s had serial numbers that were only 7 digits apart from each other. This amp is A01571, the other was A01578, which was originally covered in black Tolex with silver, black and white grill cloth and with a raised Fender logo.
Both of these amplifers have black ink tube chart stamps of NL (1964 December) and both were Production #9 and also have chassis stamps of AB 5264 (both assembled the 52nd week of 1964). This particular amp we have for sale today was originally covered in rough blonde Tolex with a wheat grille and a flat silver logo. This amp was in real rough shape when I bought it so I decided to re-cover and re-grille this amp identically to the original cosmetics. In order to get the Tolex off the top, I had remove some of the original black staples that Fender had used but I left most of the staples intact. I only added silver staples on the screen and Tolex in places where they were needed to slide the chassis in and out easier. I replaced the 4 sphinx glides and the 4 chassis bolts; other than that, it’s all the original hardware. To protect the tube chart, I taped plastic over the top to preserve it. I noticed a black ink stamp on the inside bottom of the cabinet with a 1963 date! (AB 4863) Apparently they pulled out this cabinet that was already wrapped blonde and applied the new tube chart that they were currently using during Production #9 at the time. So we have a December 1964 amp in a December 1963 cabinet as created by Fender.

I took this amp to an old amp tech of mine in 1996. He replaced the input jacks, filter caps, new AC cord, cleaned all of the pots, checked the bias, and put in a driver tube. The previous owner had attempted to add a master volume next to the serial # by drilling a hole in the back of the chassis, but my amp tech removed all of that and rewired back to stock. I was going to do something with the amp but never did. I brought this to my current amp tech in April 2024, and he went over the entire amp replacing the filter caps that weren’t replaced previously and he gave it a clean bill of health.

**It might serve the buyers purpose to bring up the power slowly with a variac since these amp heads are over 50 years old and have not been used for a few decades. Please remember these are vintage pieces, we cannot guarantee that they will not need service or more parts in their future, only some obvious parts were changed to get it working, most are still the original old parts remaining. Thank you. ***
