Pour les Papous, les masques et les statuettes sont avant tout des réceptacles qui sont offerts par les hommes et les vivants aux différents esprits de la nature et aux âmes des morts. dans leurs croyances et leur compréhension du monde qui les entoure, les Papous ne font en effet pas de différence entre les morts et les vivants, les hommes ou la nature (animaux, arbres, rivières etc…) … tous appartiennent à un même monde dans lequel chacun doit pouvoir trouver sa place. Et c’est la raison d’être des masques et des statuettes qui ont pour vocation d’offrir une « forme » à ceux qui ne peuvent pas en avoir.
