This was once fitted to a water cooled MG08 Maxim machine gun.
It has an inverted V in the optics and if you look carefully through the sight with your inner mind, you can see the British 'Tommys' rising up out of the trenches to be cut down instantly by this heavy German machine gun. The inverted V suddenly seems more like the finger of death than the greek letter Lambda.
I have never looked through an optic and experienced a more tangible feeling of how it was used.
You will go cold, you will get goose pimples (bumps). You will soon have to stop looking.
I believe history is for us to learn from, not hide from or try to deny. Otherwise despite it's value I would have given it to the scrap metal guy for melting.
Sad and honest thing is, were it from an English machine gun, and forget not, both sides were guilty of terrible actions in WW1. My feeling might be very different but to the victors go the spoils.
So please consider this a trophy of success and then buy an extra poppy for a fallen German on remembrance day this year.
Over to aBay for some less emotionally charged rhetoric......
