Ce masque intervenait lors des cérémonies rituelles du culte du Bwami.
Il faut savoir que, par rapport à d’autres masques africains, la majeure partie des masques traditionnels des Lega n'était pas portée sur le visage mais plutôt placée sur des panneaux ou utilisés à la main. La fonction des masques Lega était principalement de marquer le rang de leurs propriétaires en indiquant le grade du Bwami auquel ceux-ci appartenaient.
Le masque que je mets en vente ce soir est un masque IDIMU. Ce qui veut dire qu’il s’agissait d’un masque dont le propriétaire devait être un jeune postulant au Kindi. Pendant ce rituel du Kindi (Kilinkumbi ), les aspirants attachaient, sur une claie nommée Pala, des petits masques en bois ou en os (selon la position sociale de l'impétrant) autour d’un plus grand masque de bois qui symbolisait l'unité des groupes participant à ce rite.
Pendant ce temps derrière la claie Pala, se tenaient des membres importants Kindi, tous apparentés patrilinéairement et étroitement associés avec le grand masque de bois.

This mask was used during ritual ceremonies of the Bwami cult.

Esta máscara se utilizó durante las ceremonias rituales del culto Bwami.

AUSSERGEWÖHNLICHE IDIMU-BWAMI-INITIATIONSMASKE DER LEGA DES EHEMALIGEN ZAIRE – 1980Diese Maske wurde bei rituellen Zeremonien des Bwami-Kultes verwendet.
