Vintage Chinese Cheongsam Blue Rayon Brocade Chrysanthemum Qipao Dress

This vintage Chinese cheongsam blue rayon brocade chrysanthemum qipao dress dates from the 1950s. It is made of a jewel tone iridescent two tone blue satin rayon damask weave brocade fabric with a woven spider chrysanthemum flower design representing happiness and vitality, long life and good fortune. This traditional Chinese cheongsam dress has a form fitting hourglass style with side slit vents, a mandarin collar, short cap sleeves, decorative blue pankou knotted toggle closures on the front neckline, side snaps, zipper closures, is unlined and has a "Made in Hong Kong" Size 14 tag sewn inside. Manchu women early on wore a loose fitting one-piece dress which were called "qipao", transforming later to the more form fitting style "Mandarin Gown" popular in Shanghai during the 1920s-1940s becoming more influenced by Western fashion, fabrics and popular with tourists visiting as a souvenir. The dress measures 41 inches long, with a 36 inch chest, 30 inch waist, 36 inch hips, 15 inch back and a 15 inch neck. It is in good condition, with a blue dye stain under both arms (see close-up). This is truly a wonderful piece of Chinese cheongsam wearable art!
