KM 118, one year type, issued for the Duchy of Schleswig-Holstein as part of the German Empire. Half dollar size copper coin, with the monogram of the Danish king on the obverse.

This duchy in northwest Germany, was inherited by the King of Denmark in 1459.  After the defeat of Napoleon, Holstein joined the German Confederation, but Schleswig did not.  Possession of the lands was disputed between Denmark, Austria and Prussia for many years, resulting in at least two wars, until Denmark lost its claim in 1865.  Schleswig-Holstein became part of the German Empire in 1871.  A plebiscite after World War I resulted in part of Schleswig was ceded to Denmark in 1920.

A number of Danish coins have dual denominations, to facilitate their circulation in Schleswig-Holstein.

In the decades before the first Standard Catalog of World Coins was published by Krause Publications in 1972, there was limited numismatic information in English for world coins.  Washington collector O. P. Eklund compiled listings of the copper coins of various nations, and published them in The Numismatist (the newsletter of the American Numismatic Association).  In the 1960s, a number of these articles were reprinted by Durst Publications.

Mr. Eklund died in 1950, and a significant portion of Mr. Elkund's German States minors were acquired by world coin dealer George Beach.  In 2008, I acquired a number of these pieces from George's son James Beach.  World coin dealer Andy Singer assisted James Beach in verifying the attributions and valuations of the coins.  This coin is one of the items from the Eklund collection.

If you are using the Everycountry Collector's checklist, this is number 957 of the 1,955 location listings for Germany.
