Item Description: I am pleased to offer this original and old hand-made Japanese sword, or Nihonto, brought back from WWII. The sword is a Koto wakizashi from the swordsmith Morifusa in high quality samurai mounts. The blade is in Near MINT condition and the mountings are in Excellent condition. The sword has a blade length of 15 inches (38 cm). The blade features a well-grained mix of itame and mokume hada. The hamon is a Bizen-inspired gunome notare. The hamon is present the length of the blade through the kissaki where it ends in a maru boshi.

The tang is signed Ko __ Morifusa Saku, and is ubu, or unshortened. The second kanji needs additional research, but this looks to be a Sue-Koto Morifusa working in the mid 1500’s. Most likely he worked in Kyushu as part of either the Bungo or Kongobyoe schools. He is a very rare swordsmith.

The blade comes in Samurai mountings. They are in Excellent condition. The tsuka features a brown silk ito and high quality menuki. There is some fraying and a couple of the wraps are missing. The tsuba is a nice iron tsuba with four accompanying seppa. The saya (scabbard) is a high quality type of samezaya of overlapping pieces of same. It shows very few spots of missing finish, retaining roughly 95-97% of original finish. The blade is in Near MINT condition. There are no nicks, little to no rust, and just some scattered small scratches along the length of the blade. There are a few small lateral ware and areas of coarse grain. There are no major flaws like hagire.

Given this sword’s history and craftsmanship, I think this piece would be an excellent addition for a collector of WW2 militaria or Japanese swords.
