IMPRESSIONNANT MASQUE ESPRIT A GROS NEZ DES KOIWUT DU GRASSLAND SEPIK - 1970/1980
A la fois grotesques et effrayants, les masques Koiwut des plaines marécageuses du Sepik Septentrional ont, comme souvent quand il s’agit des masques Papous, une double fonction à la fois sociale puisqu’ils doivent matérialiser d’une façon physique l’appartenance au clan… et à la fois spirituelle puisque sans ces masques, il n’y aurait plus d’endroit où les esprits auraient la possibilité de s’incarner.
C’est d’ailleurs la raison pour laquelle les masques « Sepik » ne sont en général pas destinés à être portés. Ce serait même dangereux pour ceux qui s’y risqueraient car l’esprit pourrait choisir de quitter celui-ci pour s’installer à l’intérieur de l’être humain.
Les masques Koiwut « à gros nez » sont censés, du fait de leur appendice nasal démesuré, faciliter l’aspiration des fumées sacrées. Ces offrandes de fumées sont en effet considérées comme une nourriture pour les esprits.

IMPRESSIVE BIG NOSE SPIRIT MASK OF THE GRASSLAND SEPIK KOIWUT - 1970/1980
Both grotesque and frightening, the Koiwut masks of the marshy plains of the North Sepik have, as often when it comes to Papuan masks, a double function that is both social since they must materialize in a physical way the belonging to the clan… and at the same time spiritual since without these masks, there would no longer be a place where the spirits would have the possibility of incarnating.
This is also the reason why “Sepik” masks are generally not intended to be worn. It would even be dangerous for those who would risk it because the spirit could choose to leave this one to settle inside the human being.
Koiwut "big nose" masks are supposed, because of their disproportionate nasal appendage, to facilitate the aspiration of sacred fumes. These offerings of smoke are indeed considered food for the spirits.

IMPRESIONANTE MÁSCARA DE ESPÍRITU DE NARIZ GRANDE DE LOS PASTIZALES SEPIK KOIWUT - 1970/1980
A la vez grotescas y aterradoras, las máscaras koiwut de las llanuras pantanosas del norte de Sepik tienen, como suele ocurrir con las máscaras papúes, una doble función a la vez social ya que deben materializar de forma física la pertenencia al clan… a la vez espiritual ya que sin estas máscaras, ya no existiría un lugar donde los espíritus tuvieran la posibilidad de encarnar.
Esta es también la razón por la cual las máscaras "Sepik" generalmente no están diseñadas para usarse. Incluso sería peligroso para quien se arriesgara porque el espíritu podría optar por salir de éste para instalarse dentro del ser humano.
Se supone que las máscaras de koiwut "con narices grandes", debido a su apéndice nasal desproporcionado, facilitan la aspiración de los vapores sagrados. Estas ofrendas de humo se consideran de hecho alimento para los espíritus.

Die Koiwut-Masken der sumpfigen Ebenen des nördlichen Sepik sind sowohl grotesk als auch beängstigend und haben, wie so oft bei papuanischen Masken, eine doppelte Funktion, die sowohl sozial ist, da sie auf physische Weise die Zugehörigkeit zum Clan verkörpern müssen … als auch gleichzeitig spirituell, da es ohne diese Masken keinen Ort mehr gäbe, an dem die Geister die Möglichkeit hätten, sich zu inkarnieren.
Das ist auch der Grund, warum „Sepik“-Masken grundsätzlich nicht zum Tragen bestimmt sind. Es wäre sogar gefährlich für diejenigen, die es riskieren würden, weil der Geist sich dafür entscheiden könnte, diesen zu verlassen, um sich im Menschen niederzulassen.

Tanto grottesche quanto spaventose, le maschere Koiwut delle pianure paludose del Nord Sepik hanno, come spesso accade quando si parla di maschere papuane, una doppia funzione sia sociale poiché devono materializzare in modo fisico l'appartenenza al clan... e al tempo stesso allo stesso tempo spirituale poiché senza queste maschere non ci sarebbe più un luogo dove gli spiriti avrebbero la possibilità di incarnarsi.
Questo è anche il motivo per cui le maschere "Sepik" generalmente non sono destinate ad essere indossate. Sarebbe anche pericoloso per coloro che rischierebbero perché lo spirito potrebbe scegliere di lasciare che questo si stabilisca all'interno dell'essere umano.
