NEMADJI POTTERY - Moose Lake Minnesota  - 7" VASE - SWIRL WARE - Excellent Condition

Nemadji Pottery was founded in the early 1920's, in Moose Lake, Minnesota. It represents a unique and distinctive style of unglazed pottery. Inspired by Native American pottery, it festures rustic and swirled designs created through the slip, cast method and a 'cold striped' painting process. This potterywas made from white or colored clay - a/k/a native soil but was not made by Native Americans, per se.

Nemadji Pottery is hand thrown and baked in a kiln but left unfinished on the outside. Afterward, it was floated on a vat of water with common house paints on the surface separated by vinegar. It was dipped in the paints and given time for the paints to adhere to the surface. The inner surface was glazed so that it could retain water.

There were stories that this pottery was inspired by the local natives but this was perhaps a shrewed marketing technique. Nemadji Pottery is a popular line of ceramics with a large collector base. Nemadji ceased all production circa 2001.
