French Mercury Mark 920 Silver Art Nouveau Grandfather Teacup & Saucer 276.3g

This is a grand and large sized cup and saucer; if it was ceramic and made in England it would be referred to as a “Grandfather” or “Farmer” cup and saucer. This one is a silver and most likely dates to the art nouveau era of the late 19th century through to the early 20th century. It has the Mercury Head export silver mark used for 750 silver through to 920 silver; tests confirm it is 92%. The maker’s mark is hard to read but has a “E” and “C” initials either side of a symbol that looks like a tree; unidentified.

The cup has a low foot with short stem that supports the large bowl. This is decorated with a central band with regularly spaced dots bordered by wavy lines above and below. The front face has an ornate framed cartouche area (blank); the ornate scroll handle is set opposite. There are two secondary decorative bands with geometric art nouveau motifs. Its saucer follows the same theme.
