The D51 498 was preserved in a static state after the retirement of the actual car, but it returned to the main line with the towing of the "Orient Express '88" that came to Japan at the time of Showa 63 (1988).
Since then, it has gained popularity for pulling event trains such as the "SL Minakami" on the Joetsu Line, and has become one of the flagship cars of JR East Japan.

In Heisei 27 (2015), an LP405 type secondary light was installed next to the headlamp.
Currently, he is mainly active in "SL Gunma Minakami" and "SL Gunma Yokokawa" towing 12 series passenger cars.

We will reproduce recent changes such as the secondary lights mounted next to the headlights, the smoke collector mounting seat, the cab manufacturing nameplate, and the appearance of the tender.
