Victorian Gabardine Collar with Silver Beaded
Decoration, 26 inches long, 2 inches wide in the center back, probably
handmade, probably late 1800’s, probably American, some wear and small holes to
the cloth, some areas where the stitching of the decoration has let loose, some
loose beads, interesting collar that was not meant to be permanently attached
to a garment, one end is cut and stitched at a diagonal which is meant to be
overlapped on the other edge which is undecorated on the last inch and is cut
straight and hand stitched, the gabardine is navy blue and has a black
bombazine or buckram lining, the attached decoration is manufactured and
probably purchased by the yard, there are small round beads, large octagonal
faceted beads, and diamond shaped ovoid beads that are sewn onto a paper
backing along with metallic chain stitch threads, the beading has the look of
Marcasite’s but are probably made of glass to reduce the weight, fascinating
bit of vintage dressmaking.
