This is the 1984 German language Second Edition of FRUHMITTELALTERLICHE HANDELSSCHIFFAHRT IN MITTEL-UND NORDEUROPA (Early Medieval Merchant Shipping in Central and Northern Europe), by Detlev Ellmers and published in a quarto measuring 8.5" x 12" containing 358 pp. followed by 2 folding maps and illustrated throughout with 193 full-page and smaller B&W line drawings depicting ship accessories but more importantly operational facilities such as quays, ship landings, boathouses, storage areas, commercial buildings, etc. Information was gathered from archaeological excavations, pictorial representations and written reports of the time. More than 300 ship finds are described herein for the first time, all of which makes this book indispensable to anyone interested in the history of ship building in the early Middle Ages. The book is bound in orange cloth titled and decorated in black on the front cover and wrapped in a B&W wrap-around photo-illustrated dust jacket titled in orange. Scarce.
