Vintage Artisan Leather Medicine Bag Art, Man & Bear by Judith Costello

 

I bought this beautiful piece when I was in Taos, New Mexico for a writing workshop in the late 90s. I had an afternoon off and went into a gallery downtown and fell in love with this piece.


The old man is wearing a bear on his head. The bear head (feels like it's made of ceramic) flips up and shows a small compartment that has a small bag of stones and corn.


The rest of the piece is leather with a little fur. There are a couple pieces of turquoise in the man's braids. 


This can be worn or hung. In like-new condition.


Measures approximately 7 inches long by about 4.5 inches wide.
