Vintage Carved Wood God of Longevity 16.5" Weighs 3.7lbs Glass Eyes

CARVED WOOD SHOU LAO DIETY, GOD of LONGEVITY...with a boy, a hedgehog and a peach (the child of fortune).

Lovely carving with wonderful details. I'm unsure of the wood used on this. It could be walnut or boxwood.

The god is missing an eye and his staff shows a repair near the top. (see last photo) There are also a couple stress separations along the bottom, which I've also included a photo. The staff repair seems solid as does the bottom areas. It all feels quite solid. We do take returns, so you can return this if you don't care for it after closer inspection.

The boy has inlaid teeth & glass eyes, often used in Chinese carvings of the late 1800's.

The crane, in Chinese culture, is venerated as the prince of all feathered creatures and thus has a legendary status. Embodying longevity and peace, it is the second most favored bird symbol after the phoenix. Throughout the imperial times, crane motifs were used on the robes of civil officials to depict their ranks.

Measures about 16.5" tall.

"Shoulao, God of longevity. Usually recognizable by his tall, over sized forehead, representing wisdom and long beard representing long life. Attributes include peach and a staff, both symbols of longevity themselves, and said to come from Xi Wangmu's magical garden in Heaven where the fruits of longevity (peaches) grows."
