A revival of a custom started in the seventeenth century - the Dog Mart, is scheduled for Fredericksburg, Virginia, on October 17. Begun as a means of bater between the early settlers and the Indians, who were anxious to obtain dogs for hunting and food, the annual swapping, sale and trading of dogs and the auction of many unwanted canines by their owners, was revived a few years ago and continues as an institution. Annually dogs from many cities are brought to Fredericksburg for the event. Photos 1 and 2 -- Here's the man that makes the Dog Mat at Fredericksburg a howling success - Nathaniel Bacon Kinsey, famous auctioneer, with the historic old auction bell that he rings before he asks for bids at the annual Dog Mart at Fredericksburg. Dogs of every degree and pedigree and pedigreeless pooches all vie for bids as he disposes of the excess canine population with gusto and bell ringing. The Dog Mart - a revival of an ancient seventeenth century trading custom of the colonists and their Indian neighbors, will be held at Fredericksburg, Virginia, October 17. you are invited to come and join in "dog day" or buy or sell a dog.
