Civil War soldier's cover with May 7, 1862 dated ALEXANDRIA/VA double circle postmark and "DUE 3" in oval, with imprint at top: "Head-Quarters '2nd' Pennsylvania Regiment" (2nd PA Reserve Regt., aka the 31st PA Infantry), and with Soldier's letter endorsement: "Soldiers Letter. Wm. McCandless, Lt. Col. P.V.". Addressed to "Mrs. Anna B. Deitz, in care of Samuel Norcross, Tansboro Post Office, Camden County, New Jersey, by the way of Long a coming". 

Signed by William "Buck" McCandless, (1834-1884); commissioned Major of the 2nd PA Reserve Regiment (31st PA Infantry) on May 27, 1861; Promoted to Lt. Col. on Oct. 22, 1861; and to Colonel commanding the Regiment on Aug. 1, 1862. He was wounded at the 2nd Battle of Bull Run on Aug. 30, 1862, and wounded again at the Wilderness on May 8, 1864; He commanded the 1st Brigade of the Pennsylvania Reserve Division at the Battle of Gettysburg, leading a counter-attack at the base of Little Round Top on July 2nd; Commissioned Brigadier General at the recommendation of  both Grant and Meade, but he declined the commission, and was mustered out with his regiment on June 16, 1864.
