The colony of French Cochin China was formed in 1871 from the areas seized by the French (sometimes using Spanish soldiers from The Philippines) from Annam.  In 1887, the colony was combined with the French protectorates of Laos, Cambodia, Annam and Tonkin into French Indo China.
