Item Description: I am pleased to offer this original hand-made Japanese army officers Samurai sword from World War 2. The blade represents the opportunity to own a historic Shinto wakizashi by the well-known swordsmith Kii Yasumitsu in naval Kai Gunto mounts. The blade and the mountings are in Very Good condition. It is a healthy sword and has a blade length of 18 inches (46cm), making it a wakizashi. It shows a well-grained itame hada. The hamon is a straighter suguha that is present the length of the blade through the kissaki where it ends in a maru boshi.

The blade is signed Kii no Kuni Yasumitsu and is ubu, or unshortened. Yasumitsu was a member of the Kishu Ishido school, which was a well-known line of swordsmiths working in Kii province from the mid to late 1600’s. They were known for carrying on the Ichimonji style of making swords and worked for a branch of the Tokugawa clan at Wakayama castle.

The mountings are naval version Kai Gunto and are in Very Good condition. The tsuka is silk-cord wrapped with cherry blossom menuki. The wrapping is tight and looks to have been re-wrapped after the war. The tsuba is solid black with two accompanying metal seppa. The saya (scabbard) is rayskin and shows a few small scattered spots of missing finish, retaining roughly 94-96% original finish. Notably, the saya looks to have been shortened to accommodate the wakizashi length and reshaped for the ishizuke endcap. The blade is in Very Good condition. There are a few small micro nicks, very few small spots of rust, and several scratches along the blades length. There is one ware in the middle of the blade. There are no major flaws like hagire.

Given the age of the blade, reputation of the swordsmith, and rarity of an older Shinto in naval mounts, I think this piece would be a great addition for a collector of WW2 militaria or Japanese swords.
