GERMANY/DENMARK - Old Banknote - ZONE 2 OF THE PLEBISCITE AREA OF SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN & NORTH DENMARK - 1920 ISSUE - STEDESAND in Südtondern or Sydtønder - 40 Pfennig Emergency Banknote – Crisp and Clean Banknote, that has seen no circulation - grades in superb Uncirculated condition.

STEDESAND is a small German town in the Nordfriesland District of Schleswig Holstein. It lies just south of the town of Tønder in Denmark. The area was annexed by Prussia in 1864 from Denmark and remained part of Germany following the local plebiscites in 1920.

See below for full details -

This is a 40 Pfennig denominated Post Plebiscite issue banknote, in Multicolours. The note has a lovely design on both sides. On the face of the note is a Light Blue, White and Red lined border, reflecting the colours of the stripes on the Schleswig-Holstein Flag. Within this are the German Flag and the Schleswig-Holstein flag, flying from lances, at the centre of the note. The lances are surrounded by assorted weapons of war, atop this is the Coat of Arms of Schleswig-Holstein with linked hands, emerging from clouds above. This is a symbolic homage to the fact that Southern Schleswig was once again united with Holstein, following the 1920 plebiscites. The Danish flag can be seen on the ground symbolising Denmark's loss. Underneath the image is the following text -  '1460 Schleswig-Holstein stammvervandt haite fest zum deutschen Vaterland’ - meaning roughly that 'Schleswig-Holstein is the ancestral relative of the German fatherland'.

The reverse has a central image of a bearded man seated on a chair at home, being shown a Newspaper by another man, the printing on the paper is as follows - 'Schleswiger Organ Wahrheit u. R.' meaning - 'Schleswig Newspaper Truth and Right'. Above and below is the following text - 'Steht unsere Mark im Kurs auch schlecht. Das Mark im deutschen Arm ist echt. Fort mit Tante Cornelia die nur hetzt. Wir Friesen wissen selber was Wahrheit u. Recht.' All this means - 'Is our Mark in circulation so bad. The marrow in the German arm is real. Away with aunt Cornelia who just rushes. We Frisians know for ourselves what truth and law is (perhaps right or justice). There is a play on words here ‘Die Mark’ was and is the name of the German Currency, however ‘Das Mark’ means marrow, as in bone marrow!

Below the illustration at the bottom, is the following text - 'Dieser Gutschein verliert seine Gültigkeit einen Monat nach öffentlicher Bekanntmachung im Lecker Anzeiger. - meaning -' This voucher loses its validity one month after the recall was published in the Lecker Anzeiger.' The Lecker Anzeiger was the local newspaper in Südtonder and was published from 1892 to 1937.

Underneath is a date and signature as follows -
Stedesand den 10. Oktober 1920. At the right of this is the signature of Der Gemeindevorsteher (Council Leader) as K. Sönnichsen.

The note was designed by L Thayssen of Tondern, whose name appears at the bottom on the reverse . The note was printed by the firm of Gebh. & Kunze of Flensburg, their ident. is at the bottom centre in the margin on the face.

This Note is printed in the Vertical format on both sides and measures - 60 x 83mm.

HISTORICAL EXPLANATION - HISTORICAL EXPLANATION - This small change Emergency Banknote or Notgeld was in circulation just after the Referenda held in towns and cities of Schleswig-Holstein, following the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, where the people on both sides of the German/Danish border were allowed to vote on the issue of whether they were to be governed in the future by Germany or Denmark. Stedesand was in Zone 2, just south of Tønder/Tondern, part of which was in Zone 1and in the plebiscite the people of the town of Tønder voted over 76% to be part of Germany. However, those outside the town in the Northern part of the Tondern area voted differently, with 59% voting for Denmark. However overall, in Zone 1, which had a strong pro-Danish majority, the result was 75% voting to be returned to Denmark, so Tønder was detached from Germany and returned to Denmark as it was in Zone 1, Northern Schleswig. However, Stedesand was in zone 2 and Southern Tondern voted overwhelmingly for Germany with 87.9% in favour of remaining part of Germany, so Stedesand, remained in Germany.

The note is crisp and clean,  and has seen no circulation and minimal handling, it is as issued and therefore grades a superb UNCIRCULATED.

A note about feedback

I do not wait for you to leave Feedback for me like some sellers do, so Transactions will receive positive feedback soon after payment is made. I strive to earn 100% perfect 'five-star' scores from you, my customer. The star scores are very important because eBay uses them to determine the visibility of my items in search results. So, before you leave your Feedback for me, if anything about the transaction did not meet your expectations, please let me know and at least give me the chance to put things right, before leaving negative Feedback or contacting eBay.

Always contact me first before contacting eBay or opening a case, I will always help, I will block bidders who open cases without contacting me first!

PLEASE NOTE ALL ITEMS ARE NOW USUALLY MAILED FROM MY CURRENT LOCATION IN ITALY, posted the same day that payment is received or the next working day after payment, if made at the weekend. When I am in the UK, I will post from there. Some deliveries may take longer than normal to arrive, this is not my fault, merely the aftermath of the WELL KNOWN problems since March 2020, experienced within the International Postal System!

Although now, even though the International Postal system is almost back to normal again, there still can be the odd delay to some destinations.
