Listing REVISED to Offer Tender Options to the Winning Bidder

Up for Auction, Vintage Brass HO 2-6-6-2 Mallet Articulated Steam Locomotive in good running condition.

Also included are options for a Rivarossi Nickel Plate Road tender or an International Hobby Corporation (IHC) Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) tender (see last 4 photos).  Both of these tenders are plastic and in very good condition.  The C&O tender is more representative of the tenders used by 2-6-6-2 Mallets as can be seen in photos in the C&O Historical Society's and other railroad websites.

The manufacturer of the locomotive is believed to be Akane, made in Japan according to the marking on the underside of the aft driver's frame.

The locomotive is representative of a C&O Mallet #1302.  It was purchased by the seller with the intent of converting it to DCC.  Having previous success at converting brass steam locomotives to DCC, the design of this model is such that isolating the motor would be very difficult, and the seller's layout is DCC only.  So, the locomotive is up for auction to hopefully find a good home with someone who enjoys collecting vintage brass steam locomotives and runs DC.

The locomotive has been refurbished primarily receiving some much-needed cleaning and lubrication.  The motor is very strong and runs great in both forward and reverse directions, at both low and high speed, as can be seen in the video.  The locomotive will need a large radius curve track layout.  It is not known how high a radius is required to run the locomotive, but it will not negotiate curves as low as 18 inches in radius.

The locomotive receives one pole of electric power from the drawbar to the tender from the left (Fireman's) side of a tender.  No tender was included with the model when the locomotive was purchased by the seller.  The other pole of electric current is provided to the motor by the right (Engineer's) side of the locomotive's drivers which are conductive to the locomotive frame.

The driver rods and valve gear linkages are intact and in good working order.

There are two steps that were broken off of the front of the locomotive during shipping to the seller (see photo).  These steps will be included with the shipped item for reattachment by the buyer.

Since a tender is required to run the locomotive, either a Rivarossi brand Nickel Plate Road tender, or an IHC brand C&O tender are offered as options to the successful bidder, so the locomotive can run immediately after receipt.

The Rivarossi tender's wheel flange depth is very large and therefore it does not run smoothly on code 83 track; they could be changed with standard RP-25 wheelsets.

The IHC tender is fitted with a working back up light and a diode such that it only illuminates when the locomotive is run in reverse.

Only One Tender will be Included with the Purchase.

The successful buyer will need to Contact the Seller after winning the bid and indicate which tender is to be included, or if they want to choose the option of no tender.

If the buyer does not want either tender, no tender will be included, and a $25 refund will be issued off of the final bidding price.
