Costly Charge: Union troops charged across the arched stone bridge over Antietam Creek in the third and final battle of the Battle of Antietam, near Sharpsburg, Maryland, September 17, 1862. The action is shown in a photograph of an engraving from a sketch made at the time of the drawn-out inconclusive battle at the bridge. Sharpsburg, MD: Near this little town in Western Maryland, a muddy creek flowed beneath a stone bridge and across the rolling farmland. A breeze rippled through a field of corn, ripe for harvest.
