Sapphire Information:
Sapphire is the traditional birthstone for September. The oldest Sapphire mines are situated in Sri Lanka (Ceylon), where gemstones were mined in ancient times. During the Middle Ages, Sapphires were thought to bring Heavenly blessings.

Midnight Sapphire is a particularly deep, rich blue-black to an almost completely black variety of Sapphire. The elegance of Midnight Sapphire makes this a much sought-after gemstone. This can be easily mistaken for treasured Black Diamonds.

Be aware of similar names that are actually a completely different gemstone. For example, Brazilian Sapphire is Blue Topaz or Tourmaline while Lux Sapphire, Lynx Sapphire and Water Sapphire are other names for Iolite.

Note: Impurities and natural growth patterns exist in genuine, all-natural Sapphires which are an easy-to-use test for the real thing.

Colors and Sources:
Sapphire is a variety of corundum and not only occurs in blue, but in almost all colors of the rainbow. Blue, cornflower blue, green, midnight, orange, pink, purple, violet, white and yellow Sapphires are known. Unless otherwise specified, blue is color Sapphire that is implied. Sapphire also comes in red and are referred to as a Ruby.

Most Sapphires come from Australia, Brazil, Myanmar (formerly Burma), Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon), Tanzania, Thailand and the United States of America. Due to current political conditions, all imports (including gemstones) from some countries are not permitted under United States law. In accordance with the law, none of the gemstones offered by CAB-FineJewelry are known to be from these countries. CAB-FineJewelry does not knowingly purchase, trade, sell or giveaway goods from any country embargoed by the United States of America. As individuals we may not agree with some of the laws of our great country. However, rather than breaking the law, we choose to work toward changing these laws in a orderly and legal manner and encourage you to do the same.

Care:
This gemstone should be sparingly cleaned using lukewarm, mild, soapy water and rinsed with the same temperature water. Avoid exposure to strong light and sudden changes of temperature. As with all fine jewelry, remove before doing any type of physical work. Traditional gemstone procedure of storing in soft cloth away from other articles of jewelry hold true, too. While ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners and some chemicals could be used on this durable gemstone, we do not recommend their use. Hair-spray and perfumes can leave permanent residue on all gemstones so be sure to keep your jewelry far away from these common items.
