Die WDR BIG BAND gewann im letzten Jahr in LA einen Grammy und damit
darf sie zweifelsohne als eine der erfolgreichsten Bigbands der Welt
bezeichnet werden. Die vorliegenden Aufnahmen aus dem Jahre 1991 und
1995 sind Kompositionen von Jerome Kern, Duke Ellington, Milt Jackson,
Fats Waller, Jimmy Rushing & Ray Charles , die unter dem Motto Blues &
Beyond nun erstmalig auf BHM veröffentlicht werden. Als featuring Gäste
sind keine geringeren als Joe Williams (voc), Milt Jackson (vib), Cedar
Walton (p), John Clayton (b) und Jeff Hamilton (dr) zu bestaunen.
Besonders Joe Williams bluesiger Approach in seinen Gesangssoli, seine
tiefe emotionale Stimme verleiht den Songs einen ganz besonderen
Charme. “ I sing the blues to make myself feel better… I sing ballads to
praise life…” könnte das Motto des legendären blues and jazz singer’s sein
und der Jazzauthor Martin Williams macht bezüglich seines Gesangs
deutlich: “[JoeWilliams] introduced nuances and effects on his blues
