Under Pope John Paul II, the Vatican created new, innovative and impressive coin designs every year. 1997 was no exception.  

Vatican City bi-metallic coins consist of stainless steel and aluminum/bronze, one of which is the outside ring and the other the central disk.  For this 1997 bi-metallic, the central disk is the stainless steel.

One side of this shiny beautiful bimetallic coin shows a profile of Pope John Paul II facing right and is inscribed: "JOANNES PAVLVS II P.M. AN. XIX MCMXCVII."  The "AN. XIX" indicates the 19th year of the Papacy of Pope John Paul II and the other Roman numerals refer to the year 1997.

          

The reverse shows the Papal Arms and is inscribed: "CITTA DEL VATICANO L. 1000."

Note the "M" on the right lower portion of the Papal Arms which stands for the Blessed Mother Mary to whom Pope John Paul The Great dedicated his Papacy. 

Beautiful edge with alternating smooth and reeded segments.

This coin is an official Vatican coin which was legal tender prior to the institution of the Euro.  The size of this coin is larger than a US Quarter with a diameter of about 27 mm.
