Moonstone Information:
Moonstone is one of the modern June birthstones and a gem for the 13th wedding anniversary. Moonstone often has a silvery sheen or iridescence known as adularescence. Moonstone is the most valuable form of feldspar and is composed of albite. Moonstone was used by the Romans since as early as 100 AD who thought that the stone was formed from the light of the moon, hence its name. In India, moonstone is considered a sacred stone. In ancient times, it was believed that one could see the future if the stone was held in the mouth during a full moon. Another synonym for moonstone is selenite, which was named after the Greek goddess of the moon, Selene.
Colors:
Moonstone is an opalescent stone which ranges from colorless to blue, brown, green, grey, peach, pink, yellow. Moonstone is transparent to translucent. Rainbow moonstone is milky white with a rainbow colored sheen.
Important Note about Color: The actual color and lightness/darkness of the stone will vary from what is displayed on your monitor. There are many reasons that can cause this visual situation, One of the more important reason is the difference between transmitted light color (such as light shining through a gemstone), color generation simulations and adjustments (such as your monitor) and reflected light (light bouncing off objects). Add to this each individual’s personal color sensitivities along with variances in ambient (surrounding) light sources used when the photo was taken as well as those where you are looking at the stone. You should expect that the actual item shading and coloring will vary from what you see on any monitor or printed piece.
Sources:
Moonstone is found in Brazil, Germany, India, Madagascar, Mexico, Myanmar (Burma), Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Switzerland, Tanzania and the United States of America.

Care:
Moonstone is soft and should be handled with great care. It should be cleaned using lukewarm, mild, soapy water and rinsed with the same temperature water. Avoid sudden changes of temperature and, as with all fine jewelry, remove before doing any type of physical work. Traditional gemstone procedure of storing in soft cloth away from other articles of jewelry hold true, too. Ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners and chemicals should never be used.
