24 Britain Awakes

An important part of the commercial success of the Ferguson tractor was that it could be sold at a very keen price. In this documentary Edward Cook set out to find out how this was done. As a result there are some fascinating visits not just to the main Ferguson factory in Banner Lane  but to the factories of major suppliers.

From this filmed report we can see how this output is achieved.  Certainly the employees show are e working hard  but rather they are working efficiently . For a tractor enthusiast there is considerable interest as familiar components take shape.  With hindsight we might think the commentator is a little overoptimistic about just how contented the workers are. Factories seem to include Dowty, Beans, Sankey,  Garringtons, and Dunlop. showing manufacture of tyres

Final assembly and testing makes it interesting to see a tractor coming together for various parts we have seen being made earlier.

We have always been taught to laugh at the thought of Russian tractor factory films but here is a British equivalent.. For any Ferguson tractor enthusiast in particular this is a fascinating find.  Black and White  30

357 How a Bicycle is Made

While the factory shown  is not specifically identified but it could only be  Raleigh at Nottingham. It is  implied the factory  has 100 years experience but this may relate to illustrating previous models

A father and son are shown round . Materials testing, converting strip into tubes, pressing the bottom bracket, assembly of the frame then brazing, tempering, pickling,  and cleaning up . Making of front forks,  hand polishing, , rust proofing, enamelling, , lining out the enamelled frame, handlebar bending and then plating,  and polishing, . Mudguard making,   pedal  forging and finishing, pressing gearwheel  and cutting out teeth,  building hubs and three speeds  and of course the wheels and tyres before assembly commences . Clues in the narrative suggest this film was made in the late 1940s.. As a Raleigh owner myself I was amazed at the size of the factory.  This film ought to part of the family history of anybody with Raleigh connections. Over the years  there must have been thousands working there. It is fascinating to the speed of workers on fiddly jobs..  Made long before the import of cycles. Black and While 19 minutes with sound.

For many years Nottingham was closely associated with bicycles thanks to the reputation of Raleighs around the world..

533 Remould Tyres

Made to promote the merits of remoulding truck tyres.  And a system that tracks an owners tyre carcasses as they are collected from an operator's workshops in this case a Blue Circle Cement garage.  Carcasses travel via the local depot to the factory. Demonstrated is how the carcass sets off with its number painted on but by the time remoulding is completed it will have its unique identity moulded into the carcass. . The ingenious process is covered  and eventually the return trip features a delivery to the workshops in Hereford of Bulmers Cider.

What is particularly impressive is that although the film was made some 30 years or more ago the same type of system is still  being offered by Vacu Lug today   although many of the fleets featured in the film have since disappeared  over the years or been absorbed into others.  Some nice shots of once familiar trucks on the road.  Colour 17 minutes

615 Pirelli experimental tyre

Pirelli Experimental Tyre   BS3 615

Unusual film with Italian commentary demonstrating an experimental design of tyre where the tread pattern was made up of three bands that fit within grooves of the carcass.

While the commentary has not been translated the film demonstrates  that both the beads and optional frost nails can be fitted  (or removed ) from the main carcass with the tyre deflated  in a couple of minutes. Their grip is demonstrated by exuberant driving and later on a skating rink . The official description is a replaceable tread tyre  had it caught on there could have been massive savings in manufacturing and tyre cost I wonder if that is why it did not last ? Colour  12 mins

616 DuPont Nylon in tyre carcasses.

Synthetic carcass fabric made out of nylon  was demonstrated benefits of cooler running , resistance to impact and flexing making for longer and safer tyre life.  Includes trial on trucks by Pacific Intermountain Express.

Obviously the aim of the film was to encourage audience members to specify or accept nylon in their future tyre purchases. The benefits were contrasted with popular misuses and abuse of tyres.  From the American cars and other clues I would the film as made in the mid 1950s. .  Colour 13 mins
