Amethyst Information:
The name Amethyst is derived from the Greek word Amethystos that means sober or not intoxicated. Amethyst was often worn by the Ancient Greeks and Romans in an effort to ward off the effects of too much wine. Amethyst is one of the traditional birthstones for February. Amethyst is also a traditional gemstone for celebrating the 4th and 6th years of marriage.

Amethyst is a variety of Quartz and is often purple in color. This purple is a beautiful blend of violet and blue and is considered a royal color. As such, Amethyst has been popular throughout history. Amethysts are found in the British Crown Jewels and were a favorite of Catherine the Great as well as with ancient Egyptian royalty. Amethyst measures a respectable 7.0 on the Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness.

Colors:
Amethyst is found in all shades of purple and sometimes in blue, green, gray, violet and almost all shades in between.

Care:
Many gemstones are soft and should be handled with great care. Even those that are considered hard can be scratched and cracked. Most gemstones should be cleaned using lukewarm, mild, soapy water and rinsed with the same temperature water. Avoid sudden changes of temperature and, as with all fine jewelry, remove before doing any type of physical work. Traditional gemstone procedure of storing in soft cloth away from other articles of jewelry hold true, too. Ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners and chemicals should never be used.
