You are bidding for a video record of the long discarded 16mm film described below. When the film was made it provided a unique insight into its particular subject. Over the last thirty years a number of enthusiasts realised that such films provided an untapped source of information on past techniques and methods At some time in the past it would have been rescued after being discarded as obsolete by the original owners .

Any money raised from the sale of this video will go towards offsetting the costs of more rescues.

This DVD recorded during a showing of the films described over 30 years ago

The Big Picture US Army recruiting film show various scenes from deployments in I should think the 60s.

814Training film for submariners. Starts from first principles of how a diesel engine works  starting from a piece of bamboo.  This film must have been watched attentively by many personnel commencing their training. It must be very clearly set out as several intelligent ladies with no particular interest in engines felt far better informed after  watching this film. Plenty of animated drawings . This film offers a good demonstration of how the military made effective use of 16mm for training new recruits.. Both 2 and 4 stroke diesel cycles are covered . Winton diesel submarine engine shown   Hamilton MAN engine   has an even more complex sequence.  Fairbanks Morse

Until I saw this film I had not realised how complex a layout was adopted to get maximum power out a submarine’s diesel engine . Scavenging and supercharging is explained  It one thing reading a brief technical description  but this film makes it much clearer. Next comes an explanation of air blast  injections . Bosch fuel pump  and injector and the Winton unit injector .  You would have to be an extremely well informed diesel engineer to already know and understand  all the information which this film makes clear. When you realise how much information is packed into the film it is a great surprise to discover it only took 30 minutes and not surprisingly  is in black and white.  I must emphasise that it is mainly animated illustration there are no sequences in submarines nor of engines running.. It dates back to World War II

Black and white Sound film

0269  The diesel engine for some naval purposes was supplemented by the Gas Turbine  This film was made by Bristol Siddley although by the time is was in circulation they were part of Rolls Royce. They showed installation of some of the first gas turbine in fast pursuit ships and their claimed advantages over steam and diesel  for high outputs.

0815  Gas Turbines how they work from first principles.  Again it was an early  film on their working s but it is clear and lucid explanation.  Unless you are already familiar with the principal you will finish up wiser than when your started.

Technical Note. This is a DVD record of a private screening. Transfer quality is to enable the contents to be studied rather than to achieve the high standard achieved by professional broadcast and commercial video publishers
