Overview:
The S30 Nissan and Fairlady Z, are name variants of the same car the Datsun 240Z manufactured by Nissan Motors, Ltd. of Japan. The HLS30 was the title given to left-hand drive type and the HS30 for the right hand one. The Z car was the brainstorm of Mr. Yukata Katayama, who conceived the design of this vehicle. It made its debut in 1970. This car was the first major success for Nissan Company in the U.S. and was sold under the brand name Datsun.
The engine of the Datsun 240Z was based on that of Datsun 1600, with the addition of two extra cylinders. The car has a coupe styled body and is a rear wheel drive. It is equipped with a 4-speed manual transmission and has a compression ratio of 9.0 to 1. The car has a 146 cubic inch, straight 6-cylinder engine. It managed to churn 150 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque and accelerate the car from 0 to 60 mph in 8 seconds. The engine is located in the front and has solid valve lifters. The 240Z uses two Hitachi SU-type carburetors. The independent suspension system aids the quick response and high performance of the car, and comprises of MacPherson struts in front and Chapman struts in back. There are disc brakes in the front and drum brakes in the rear. The car has a rack and pinion steering.
The Z car was successful in the racing arena. It was also successful in the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) C-class scene. John Morton, for the Brock Racing Enterprises (BRE), claimed victory in 1970 and 1971 in the SCCA C-class production racing, driving the 240Z. The car also swept many victories in the IMSA (International Motor Sports Association). In 2004, Sports Car International ranked the Z car #2 on the Top Sports Cars list of the 1970s.
