Character Descriptions

Mikoto Misaka is in the series' Railgun and Index as one of the main character's in both series. Mikoto grew up in atypical childhood, due to the wealth of her family, discovering to be a Level 1 electricity user esper, which she later had come to be know as one of the top 5 espers in Academy City. Mikoto was tricked into giving the city's scientists her DNA under the notion of finding the cure for a disease, but their actual goal to create military-grade combat clones of her. Because the clones did not have the same power level as Mikoto, they were instead used in a Project called "Level 6 Shift", intended to make another esper, Accelerator, the first level 6 esper by having him kill 20,000 clones (which Mikoto tried to stop with no success).  

Mikoto attends Tokiwadai Middle School, one of the five elite schools of Academy City, a famous all girls' school for the rich and elite espers. Her image is appears as a proper lady and like any girl she is into cute things (in secret), but in reality, a small few friends and others know her as a short-tempered, prideful attitude with some tomboyish tendencies, insecurities, and with a strong sense of morals and hates injustice. Mikoto is more than annoyed with Toma Kamijo, (calling her "Biri Biri" ("Bugzapper" or "Sparky" in the English) ever since they met), when he first negates her electricity after he "tried" to rescue her in the Index series. Ever since that incident, she's always trying to have "death" match with Tōma and defeat him, who is always trying to avoid conflict with her. Toma gets involved with Misaka, trying to sacrifice herself when stopping the "Level 6 Shift" project. Tōma's "Level 0" canceller stops Accelerator & cancelling the project, and the remaining 9969 surviving "Sisters" are spared.

In both series, her electromaster ability can generate and manipulate electricity which she can use shocking opponents, cling to surfaces, manipulate iron particles into a chain-sword whip, and hack into electronics. computer networks and security systems. In the SEGA figure, she has a stance of powering up her electricity into using one of her moves. Mikoto's signature move is her ability to shoot metal projectiles such as coins at high destructive speeds, hence her nickname, "Railgun" ("Super Electromagnetic Cannon"). If she is in a bad mood, she will sometimes let out bursts of electricity describing her emotional stress, usually resulting in power failures or in worse cases, a thunder storm that causes citywide blackouts.

Kuroko Shirai is Mikoto's kohai (junior) and also attends Tokiwadai Middle School. A main character as well in both in Railgun and in  Index series.  She is a member of Judgment, a special public committee group whose duty is to maintain peace and order in Academy City (an ROTC/neighborhood watch/meets cadet police force). Shirai has an obsessive crush with jealous rage tendencies on Mikoto, (she calls "Onee-sama" or "Sissy" in the English dub), constantly looking for a chance to be alone with Mikoto, who usually punches or electro-shocks her.

Her powers are Level 4 Teleport ("Spatial Movement" or instant teleportation), which allows her to teleport herself and/or anything she touches under a total weight of around 130-137 kilograms to anywhere within a radius of around 81-85 meters. Like her SEGA figure, Shirai generally carries a strap of nails around her leg that she can teleport to pin down enemies. Teleporting objects into other objects displaces them, allowing her to cut through hard objects like giant concrete pillars with just a sheet of glass.
