BILLY LEE RILEY – Red Hot:  The Best Of Billy Lee Riley. AVI Records AVI CD 5007. FACTORY SEALED NEW CD. This release issued in 1995. 24-track compilation from the Sun Records’ archive; includes two alternate versions. TRACKS:  Rock With Me Baby, Trouble Bound, Flying Saucer Rock & Roll, I Want You Baby, Red Hot, Pearly Lee, Wouldn’t You Know, Baby Please Don’t Go, Down By The Riverside, No Name Girl, Come Back Baby (One More Time), Got The Water Boilin’ Baby, Open The Door Richard, Flying Saucer Rock & Roll (alternate), She’s My Baby (alternate 1), Let’s Talk About Us, That’s Right, Rock With Me Baby, Searchin’, College Man, Your Cash Ain’t Nothing But Trash, Swanee River Rock, Betty & Dupree, and When A Man Gets The Blues. DESCRIPTION:  First off, this is not the same as the 1999 Collectables release:  Red Hot – The Very Best Of Billy Lee Riley, though it does duplicate many of the same tracks and is equally recommended especially for including a selection of some of his great R&B styled recordings (which many seem to overlook). You do get his major rockabilly recordings, all made between 1955 and 1960, for Sun Records plus 2 alternates. This release should more than serve the need of the curious and average fan.

As I couldn’t find specific details on this release, for your further reading enjoyment and enlightenment I offer the following biographical information for those of you who may not be too familiar with Riley’s work which also mentions some of the recordings featured on this CD release:

Born in Pocahontas, Arkansas, the son of a sharecropper, Riley learned to play guitar from black farm workers. After 4 years in the Army, Riley first recorded in Memphis, Tennessee in 1955 before being lured to Sun Studios by Sam Phillips. He recorded Trouble Bound for Jack Clement and Slim Wallace. Sam Phillips obtained the rights and he released Trouble Bound b/w Rock With Me Baby September 1,1956 (Sun 245). His first hit was Flyin’ Saucers Rock and Roll b/w I Want You Baby released February 23,1957 (Sun 260) after which he recorded Red Hot b/w Pearly Lee released September 30,1957 (Sun 277) both with backing piano by Jerry Lee Lewis. Red Hot was showing a lot of promise as a big hit record, but Sam Phillips pulled the promotion and switched it to Great Balls Of Fire by Jerry Lee Lewis. To add insult to injury Sam seemed to loose interest in promoting Riley’s further Sun releases, which after one spin of this CD will have you scratching your head and saying, “Huh, what was he thinking?” Considered good looking and with wild stage moves, Riley had a brief solo career with his backing band The Little Green Men. Riley and his Little Green Men were the main Sun studio band. They were Riley, Roland Janes, J.M. Van Eaton, Marvin Pepper, and Jimmy Wilson, later joined by Martin Willis (and these guys had some chemistry going on, which could, in part, explain Phillips’ reluctance in wanting to have Riley out on the road promoting hit singles). In 1960, he left Sun, and started Rita Record label with Roland Janes. They produced the national hit record Mountain Of Love by Harold Dorman (most of you will be more familiar with Johnny Rivers’ version from 1964 which hit #9 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart). He later started two other labels Nita and Mojo. In 1962, he moved to Los Angeles and worked as a session musician with Dean Martin, the Beach Boys, Herb Alpert, Sammy Davis Jr. and others, as well as recording under various aliases. In the early seventies, Riley quit music to return to Arkansas to begin his own construction business. In 1978 Red Hot and Flyin’ Saucers Rock ‘n’ Roll were covered by Robert Gordon and Link Wray, respectively, which led to a one-off performance in Memphis in 1979, the success of which led to further recording at Sun Studio and a full-time return to performing. Rediscovered by Bob Dylan in 1992, who had been a fan since 1956; Riley plays Rock and Roll, Blues, and Country-Blues as well as being a Rockabilly pioneer and innovator. His album Hot Damn! (Capricorn, 1997) was nominated for a Grammy. Billy passed away in August of 2009.

If you have any questions or if you have additional information, especially corrections, to the description, please e-mail me. I particularly enjoy when an artist, band member, or someone who has personal background knowledge of a particular album/artist and offers their insight/information of that recording, which I will include with the description for future listings of that release. As a collector of many years, part of the hobby side for me is to learn about the background of the artists and music that I collect. TERMS AND ABBREVIATIONS:

Unless noted, all CDs come in standard jewel cases.

SS or SLD:  Still Sealed or Sealed. Short abbreviation that will appear in the title line of my listings. This item is new and unplayed. Also appears in the listing description as Sealed CD or Factory Sealed CD.

NEW CD:  This item is new and unplayed, but was received from a supplier without being shrink wrapped or cellophane wrapped; more common on imports but also many of the smaller independent US labels do not seal their CDs; some have it both ways (for which I have no prior knowledge of or choice when placing my orders). Other companies use resealable clear outer sleeves which are used on some import and domestic releases. If I receive an item this way it will be shipped as I received it and not opened up. Items received unwrapped are placed inside of a resealable clear outer mylar sleeve at the time they are received.

All CDs that do not come in an outer packaging wrap are inspected by me prior to shipping. It is not unusual to find small imperfections in the disc, especially on European manufactured CDs; these small imperfections do no affect the play of the disc. If, for any reason, a disc does not play it is fully guaranteed by me and is returnable for refund or replacement (see my return policy below for more details). Also an unsealed jewel case may show light signs of warehouse/transit storage wear. If a jewel case is received by me broken, it will be replaced with a new jewel case before shipping; sealed CDs received with cracked/damaged jewel cases will be noted as such in the above item’s description and will be opened up and replaced at the buyers request at the time of purchase (otherwise they will be shipped as is).

*ALL CUSTOMERS*

HANDLING TIME:

Packages are usually shipped in less than 72 hours. NOTE:  This is not the same thing as delivery time, which begins once a package is turned over to the post office; averaging 3-7 business days for US delivery and 5 days to 3 weeks for international delivery. International delivery is largely determined on how long it takes your local customs to process its mail. I will confirm receipt of payment and shipping date via my personal e-mail, adjust your filters accordingly. If you do not hear from me within the first three days after your payment, most likely my attempts to e-mail you have failed. Please keep me posted on your payment plans or any special requirements/needs of your purchase.

RETURN POLICY:

Please e-mail me with specific details and I will get back to you with your options. I ask that if there is a problem with the item that you contact me as soon as possible after receiving it. Any item that must be returned is done so at the buyer’s expense. Any refund, exchange, or substitution/credit will be at the buyer’s choice, but not made until the original item is received back by me; in the condition as stated in the item description.

NON-ARRIVAL OF PACKAGES:

US Customers:  Please wait at least two weeks from my confirmed shipping date before contacting me about the non-arrival of your package. All packages are shipped with confirmation/tracking, you will received an automatically generated shipping notice via e-mail with your tracking number. It has been several years since I’ve had a package not make its US destination, so risk is minimal.

INTERNATIONAL Customers:  Please wait at least 3 weeks from my confirmed shipping date before contacting me about the non-arrival of your package. If security is your concern please have your package registered (see above for fee). I do my best to quickly post packages, but once the package is in the hands of the world’s postal systems it is beyond my control. With First-Class Package International Service my only option for investigating the loss of your package is to verify that it left this country to its destination country. Most all delayed/lost packages have disappeared/been delayed after they have reached their destination country. NOTE:  Based on recent buyer feedback, International packages have been moving much slower these days; it is not unusual for a package to take over three weeks for delivery, though normally packages should arrive in 7 to 15 business days.

ALL CUSTOMERS:  If there is a problem with your purchase please e-mail me first with details before filing a resolution.
