Preface by ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE is dated:

April 26, 1929

On the inner prelim of the original dustjacket, there is a message from Sir Winston Churchill who wrote:

'Of course I read every Sherlock Holmes story, but the works I like even more than the detective stories are the great historical novels which, like Sherlock Holmes, have certainly found a permanent place in English literature.'.

This volume comprises most of Conan Doyle's short stories other than those relating to the great detective Sherlock Holmes.

The ORIGINAL dustjacket bears the price of 20s net to the bottom of the inner front prelim.

It has slight water damage to the bottom. It is a little soiled in general but it is complete and intact.

Boards are rust coloured cloth with gold/gilt lettering to the spine and front board. The spine cloth is lighter than the boards and there is a fair amount of soiling to the cloth. The binding remains tight.

Written inside the front board it states: 'Sitwell'

Written by Edith Sitwell, herself.

There is a minimum amount of foxing to the end-pages and throughout the book.

'There is an error in how many pages there actually are because there are in fact 1202 pages. It does not mean that there are 14 pages missing; it means that they made an error on the dustjacket. The very last story does actually finish on page 1202 because at the bottom of the last page the printers name appears which always appears on the very last page of a book'.

Apart from the page edges being browned, the pages are in a beautifully clean condition.

The top edge is still a deep red in colour.
