Description Meet the Mariners, class of 1972, the year of Pink Floyd, UCLA Basketball and running grunions. Before cell phones, video games and Facebook, these Mariners came of age beachcombing the shore and surfing the tide of Cortez, a small patch of sand located in Imperial Beach, the southwesterly-most city in the United States. It is 1992 and the class of 1972 is back to relive old memories and make new ones. Sabra and Marcus are back, unknowingly they are staying in adjoining rooms at the same beachside villa. Ronnie and Eva are here, but so is wife, Marla. She is from Florida and sinks in Pacific sand like a stone. Shana and Carl are back, but not together. Carl went for a swim one evening at Cortez and never came back. It wasn’t until three days later that Shana and the other Mariners learned of his drowning. Like a modern day A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Mariner’s nature intrudes as the order that all of our individual dreams succumb. In the case of Cortez, the sea is personified by Ariel, an award winning sand mermaid. Like the sea, she brings answers. â€There’s a song from the sea. If you listen closely, you can hear the words-better here than there hodads-back to the sea where all things began.†As it turns out the Mariners of 1972 return to the natural order of their lives, realizing that Cortez, the tiny patch of sand where they came of age, goes with them. Viola: a shipwrecked girl (any age). Marcus: a good looking ex surf-bum in his late thirties or early fourties, but looks younger because of the way he carries himself. Brook: a displaced debutante in her early thirties. Sabra: a gorgeous & fit beach girl in her late thirties. Grey: an amicable Midwesterner who tries very hard to fit in (in his mid-40s). Ariel: the Mermaid Ron: Marcus’ high school friend. He is not as cool as Marcus, but his boyish traits make him charming; in his late 3thirties, but looks younger. Marla: a displaced “Easterner†who is not conducive to the attitudes and morays of the west; in her early fourties but acts older. Carl: another friend of Marcus; he is the boy from the sea. He drowned when he was eighteen, so his age and looks have been preserved. Shana: ex cheerleader and very cute. She is in love with her memory of Carl. She is in her late thirties but looks much younger. Eva: a beach girl and friend to Shana. Eva is one of the first women to surf big waves with the boys. She is in her late thiritess but l

Sirens: A girl from a Spanish shipwreck walks onto the shores of Cortez. Cortez: Skit takes place on an oceanfront condo/balcony at 1 Cortez Avenue, Imperial Beach, California. Two separate couples, Marcus and Brook and Grey and Sabra, have rented condos for Mar Vista High's fifty-year all-class reunion. The condos share a common balcony. Each couple has an unwilling spouse who has been convinced to come back to the "old haunts." Sabra and Marcus were once lovers and do not realize they are next door to each other in the building. Lost Mermaids: A perturbed Grey heads down to the beach to find Sabra. He runs into Chesla, who also seems to have "misplaced" something. The Ring and the Lens: A married couple has planned their vacation around the fifty-year reunion. They decide to take a walk on the beach prior to the big event, and as Ron is showing Marla all the sights (Cortez), he steps on something sharp. When he digs it from the sand, he realizes it is the contact lens from a romantic night on the beach many years ago. The Boy from the Sea: One night, Carl and Shana say their farewells before going off to different colleges.
Carl is never heard from again and becomes known as the Boy from the Sea. Tonight on Mar Vista High School's fiftieth all-class anniversary, he thinks he hears a call from the shore. When he arrives at Cortez, he meets Ariel. He tells her he haunts these shores because there are so many things he never got to do. The Lens and the Ring: One evening, a young man who loves the ocean intends to give his girlfriend his class ring as a promise for them to always be together. When he takes the ring out, he drops it in the sand and begins a frantic search to find it, but to no avail. As Eva tries to help, she loses her contact lens in the sand. The Girl I Never Knew: Two friends, Carl and Shana, are at Cortez on the last night of the summer. When morning comes, they will be heading off to different colleges. They have secretly liked each other for a long time but neither has been able to step up. Until tonight. They promise to write each other, but they realize a long-distance romance will be difficult. They lament the fact that they weren't brave enough to tell each other how they feel and vow to always be honest with each other.
YOLO becomes their secret code word to remind them of when they are holding back and not being honest with each other. Carl is never heard from again after that night and becomes known as the Boy from the Sea. Going Home: Viola and Carl appear on the Cortez shoreline. Carl asks if Viola knows what happened to her. Viola tells him she escaped from a sinking ship. She recites the passage. Carl tells her that she has the passage wrong. She says it's "all save one." When he shows her the script, "it's all save none" and no more, Viola realizes she should go home. Carl says he'll go too. Remembering = dying. The Grunion are Running: The characters assemble at Cortez to witness the running of the grunion. The grunion hasn't run at Cortez for many years due to the development of the sloughs and beachfront condos. Tonight on Mar Vista High School's fifty-year all-class reunion, the grunion magically ride the waves into the sand and lay their babies, ensuring future generations of silvery summer evenings at 1 Cortez Avenue.
