David Lean (1908 - 1991) is the director of such classic films as Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, Ryan’s Daughter, and A Passage to India. He won two Best Director Oscars for The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) and Lawrence of Arabia (1962), was nominated for Best Director and Best Screenplay for Brief Encounter (1945), A Passage to India (1984), and Great Expectations (1946), and for Best Director for Summertime (1955) and Doctor Zhivago (1965).
