Hematite Information:
Hematite is named from the Greek word for blood haem because of the reddish color which is observed when Hematite is powdered. Chemically, Hematite is Iron Ore – Iron III Oxide – (Fe2O3) and is one of the most historically important minerals in the world. Its historical use as tools and other implements allowed for unparalleled advancement of mankind.
Hematite has been used since prehistoric times and has been discovered in previously undisturbed Egyptian tombs. In addition to its use in implements, Hematite is used as a pigment for paints and cosmetics, as a grinding polish for glass and other materials, as well as its use in jewelry.
Colors:
Hematite colors range from black to steely grey, various shades of brown and a wide range of red and reddish colors.

There are many reasons that can cause this visual situation, One of the more important reason is the difference between transmitted light color (such as light shining through a gemstone), color generation simulations and adjustments (such as your monitor) and reflected light (light bouncing off objects). Add to this each individual’s personal color sensitivities along with variances in ambient (surrounding) light sources used when the photo was taken as well as those where you are looking at the stone. Hematite is one of the most abundant ores in the world and is found worldwide with major deposits in the Lake Superior vicinity in North America. Other areas with large deposits include Australia, Brazil, Canada, England, Labrador, Mexico and Venezuela. Hematite crystals have been found by the Mars Rover in samples analyzed on that planet.

Care:
This gemstone should be cleaned using lukewarm, mild, soapy water and rinsed with the same temperature water. Avoid sudden changes of temperature and, as with all fine jewelry, remove before doing any type of physical work. Traditional gemstone procedure of storing in soft cloth away from other articles of jewelry hold true, too. Ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners and chemicals should never be used.
