Welcome to Antiques & Moore!

This listing is for a FABULOUS and RARE 19th Century Mt. Washington "ROYAL FLEMISH" Art Glass cracker jar or biscuit barrel with "Coin Medallion" design.

This stunning cracker jar has an ovoid shape with raised gold panels decorated with four Romanesque coins. The applied silver plated rim is ornately decorated and has its original fitted lid. The decoration is hand painted in Indian red, burnt sienna and green tones with fine details. The design is highlighted with raised gold lines and features coin medallions spaced over the body of the glass. The design includes a Roman soldier, rampant lion, dancing graces, an elderly gentleman and a suburst.

This rare piece of Royal Flemish glass is in excellent Estate condition with no chips, cracks or repairs.

Measures 8 3/4" high with a top diameter of 2 3/8", maximum width of 6" and the base is 2 3/4" in diameter.

"Royal Flemish" was patented by Mt. Washington in 1894.  It was a clear, thick, heavy glass with a frosted or acid/satin finish with a stained glass appearance. This glass is stunning when light shines through the glass.  Designs were very creative on Royal Flemish glass and any design in this rare glass is highly desirable.

The early examples of Royal Flemish glass were marked with a paper label with some of the later pieces being marked with the "C M" monogram.  Although unmarked, this lovely cracker jar is unquestionably Mt. Washington's Royal Flemish glass and is a fabulous example of this RARE and collectible Art Glass.

The piece is illustrated on pages 189, 193 and 196 of the "Mt. Washington Art Glass" book by Betty B. Sisk printed in 2003. An example of this glass in this Coin Medallion pattern is pictures on page 110 of the reference book "The Collector's Encyclopedia of American Art Glass, Second Edition" by John A. Shuman III.
