In mid 1979, Pelikan introduced the new Signum writing instruments whose shape is characterized by designs of the Ulm School.

The Ulm school was founded after the war as a new School of Design, focusing on the design of everyday objects. It was based on the Bauhaus style, which connects practicality, functionality, and design.

All models of the Signum series were slim models targeting an adult market. Each pen had a black grip section.
