This is a most interesting antique white plaster - pottery bust of
Mrs HOW
Modelled by F.R. Rambaut.

It is a head and shoulders all sculptured on a pedestal and is all one peice.
At the back it has the wording impressed

Fred R. Rambaud
1850

On the very bottom it has a paper label which has ink writing and its a family tree of people.
JEAN RAMBAUT - MARIE HAUTENVILLE
WILLAIM m MARY ANNE GIBNEY
FREDERICK m MARGARET READ
Frederick was sculptor ( father of Bertie )

The bust is really quite good and you can see it has some little tiny and rubs and is discoloured.
She has her hair in a bun at the back and plaited too with a headband of roses. A low cut off the shoulder robe shawl which has a brooch or fastener at her left hand side shoulder... her right hand side as you look at her.
The only real damage is at the bottom of the pedestal at the left hand side as you look at her.. its just worn away at this point.
It is 13 and half inch tall overall x 4 and 1/2 inch base dia x 3 and 3/4 inch width of her shoulders x 4 and 1/2 inch between her back and bust.
He was 27 years old when he did this sculpture. I wonder did he do anymore ? I see that one of his children went to Uppingham School so there is a lead.

Once upon a time we could add links of interesting websites relating to the items we sold.. but we are no longer allowed to add links.. so you will have to google yourselves. I have done a little bit of research and find it very interesting indeed... first thing you will notice is the surname Rambaut .. it is spelt Rambaud on the impression on the back of the sculpture ... but the hand writing and the small celluloid label hung from her neck its spelt RAMBAUT.
I have other items from this Rambaut family deceased estate and can confirm it is spelt Rambaut.
If you google RAMBAUT FAMILY OF BLACKROCK & DUBLIN  you should find the info I have found ... so going by the info on the bottom of the bust Jean Rambaut was the youngest son of Leonard Pierre Rambaut of Duras who fled France to Ireland in 1754 and was one of the founders of the French Church, it is said that Jean was the first man to use and umbrella in Ireland !....Jean Rambaut married Marie Hautenville ....the Hautenville family were living in Blackrock were originally Huguenots of ancient French lineage. Frederick Robinson Rambaut was born in 1823 , he was a land agent and an importer of fine wine, he married Margaret Elizabeth Read and she was born in 1835 and died in 1910. Frederick died in 1906 at Templeville Killiney. Frederick his wife Margaret and a couple of their children are buried in plot No.1434 at Mount Jerome Cemetery Dublin.
Frederick was father of Bertie.. is this Bertrand Rambaut...... ? if so it could be the same Bertrand Ramsey Robinson Rambaut who was a Major in WW1 ...or it could be a later Arthur Edmund Rambaut born 1885 ...so more questions here.
Then another important question who was Mrs How ? Clearly a very attractive lady.
I have some steel engraved plates which are for a Pedigree book of the Rambaut family to list soon.. so I may get some more answeres when I look at them. There will be any amount of relatives living all over the world of this Frederick Robinson Rambaut and Mrs How of course and I am sure they will be as enthusiastic of this as I am.
