Wonderful vintage 100% wool Welsh tapestry historical 19th century Caernarvon Quilt

A genuine antique original 19th century Welsh woven wool blanket.. a Carnarvon quilt.

In 1876 Prince Albert Edward (the future King Edward VII) opened the Caernarfon Waterworks where he was presented with a blanket hand woven by John Roberts, a Caernarfon weaver. The  piece was recorded as depicting the castle and Welsh emblems.

From 1895 copies were made by John Griffith Jones of Pwllheli Woollen mill,  featuring Caernarfon Castle plus the University College at Aberystwyth and the words "CYMRU FU" & "CYMRU FYDD" (literally "Wales Was" (the castle), & "Wales Will Be" (education as the future) These blankets are bordered with Welsh dragons, daffodils & leeks. They were produced until 1926, and late 19th century blankets, are rare with one in Bangor Museum, one in Ceredigion Museum, one in the Welsh National Woollen Museum at Drefach Felindre & 2 others known to be in private collections. (Info taken from Ann Sutton: The Textiles of Wales)

In the 1960's Trefriw Woollen Mill produced quilts based on this traditional design, (so more modern copies are available elsewhere. )

Our blanket is one of the old 19th century blankets in the beautiful original colours- soft shades of orange and cream.
