Sheaffer Lifetime Balance pen, 1930s, in green marble Radite celluloid with gold filled trim. Short hump clip, long section, comb feed. This model was Sheaffer's second biggest at the time, full length but with a smaller girth than the oversized Senior. It has a 7-size nib.

The nib is extraordinary. It's very fine and very flexible. With no pressure it makes a very fine line, which I measured at 0.1-0.2mm. When pressure is added it gets up to about 1.7mm. As such, it's comparable to the steel dip nibs and early gold iridium-tipped dip nibs that calligraphers use for spencerian or copperplate script. The amount of pressure required to spread the tines is normal and expected -- it's neither too soft nor too firm for its range. I would not call it a wet noodle. See the writing samples.

My favorite nibs are rare flexible Sheaffer Lifetime nibs of the 1930s. They are very hard to find, and they contain a wide variety. Some are firm-ish and a little bit italic, others finer and more flexible. This one, with its very thin hairlines and excellent line variation, is quite unusual, even within this very small world. But a nib like this is quite rare even without considering the Sheaffer name. It would be just as remarkable if it were a Waterman or a Wahl.

A versatile calligraphy tool, and also a charming vintage pen.

Lever filler, restored and working with a new sac installed. Length about 5  3/8 inches.

The writing samples are made using the pen itself, dipped in Waterman Intense Black ink. The paper is a Rhodia pad with 5mm squares.
