TANZANITE BACKGROUND INFO:
Tanzanite is a blue variety of the gemstone zoisite.
It is blue, often with a hint of purple. It was discovered in 1967 and is found in only one place in the world: the East African state of Tanzania from which it derives it’s name. It is mined within sight of Kilimanjaro volcano. It was accidentally noticed by some passing Masai shepherds who picked up some crystals sparkling in the sun.

It was immediately & enthusiastically promoted by the famous jeweller Tiffany, hence it’s current popularity.
Mining is carried out in a few small primitive mines and production is very limited.
Most raw crystals have a brownish-yellow secondary colour which disappears when the gemstone is heated. This treatment is regarded as customary in the trade and is allowed by the Gemmological Institute of America.
