A Nice, Medium, Highly Illuminated, Arabic Manuscript Koran.  Complete KORAN. 302 leaves (604 pages) with five illuminated pages, two in the beginning, two at the end and one in the middle; size: 12 x 17 cm; 15 lines to a page.  The Arabic is written in thin but beautiful, clear, and elegant naskhī script; in black ink. The Arabic text is vocalized throughout.

 

Headings of chapters are written in red ink on gold strips.  Two leaves at the beginning of the Koran, and two leaves at the end of the Koran, and on [age in the middle of the Koran (folio 149b) are beautifully illuminated in gold and colors.  All verses are separated by gold discs.  Divisions of the Koran are marked in medallions in gold and colors on the margins.  There are tens of such medallions.  Recitational marks are all in red.  All pages are ruled in several lines of gold, red, black, and blue. 

 

Nicely bound in full brown leather, with a flap in the Islamic tradition of bookbinding; covers are embossed in central medallion. Covers are slightly rubbed, spine rebacked, minor smudges, but still in excellent condition. 

 

The Ottoman Turkish Koran was written by Habib al-`Abidin Husayn (the name was erased but it can be read still) in 1281 of the Islamic calendar, corresponding to 1864 AD.  [K96]
