Focusing on material following his early '70s tenure in Steeleye Span, this 15-track 1993 compilation is probably the single finest starting point for novices wishing to explore the work of this brilliant and incredibly influential guitarist and singer. Carthy's unique playing style helped mentor an entire renaissance in British folk through his early involvement in Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span.
Though there's a duff track or two here--especially the synthesizer-laced folk-rock of "Palaces of Gold"--you'll get an excellent overview of Carthy's varied career. Interested listeners might want to check out his early solo records like 1964's MARTIN CARTHY as well as his more recent work with wife Norma Waterson and daughter Eliza Carthy.
