This story is written at 3 levels that automatically adjust—from simple text to more complex words and sentences. Extend the fun with 3 mini-games, and use the motion sensor to help Dusty dodge obstacles! Curriculum That Goes Beyond Core Skills
LeapFrog interactive storybooks are packed with learning, helping kids develop foundational skills while offering practise with reading. Disney Planes features six exciting learning activities that help build listening, reading comprehension, and vocabulary skills. For example, in one game children shake the learning tablet to see words fall out of the paragraph, then drag the words back into place to complete the paragraph. This activity helps children understand story sequence and how words fit into sentences. Children can also explore word-based activities that prompt them to build words using consonant blends and to identify antonyms, or words with opposite meanings. Comprehension activities prompt readers to answer questions about the story they have read.
Personalised for Every Child
As with all LeapFrog interactive storybooks, Disney Planes offers the same high-flying adventure written at three levels of difficulty. Based on a child's profile age and reading level in past titles, an initial level is automatically selected. The level then adjusts based on a child's performance on a range of learning activities that children encounter throughout the story. As children complete these activities, their scores help suggest a text level that will provide the appropriate level of challenge. Different story levels introduce increasingly complex spelling patterns along with high-frequency sight words that are more challenging to sound out. At any point, children may choose to engage with text that is above their recommended level, which allows exposure to even richer language and more sophisticated sentence structure while promoting listening comprehension. Children can also self-select a reading mode. In the Read to Me mode, children hear the entire text read aloud for a non-stop storytelling experience. For children who have not yet begun to read on their own, hearing text read aloud helps build comprehension and vocabulary. In the Read with Me mode, the story is read with stops on each page, allowing children to listen to the story and pause for the play-and-learn activities. In the Read on My Own mode, children read the text on their own and can even record and replay their own voice for each page, replacing the narrator's voice. If they encounter a word they don't know, they can tap it to see a picture of the word's meaning or watch the letters highlight as the word is sounded out. This helps foster an understanding of letter-sound relationships—the building blocks of phonics.
Fun with Their Favourite Characters
LeapFrog interactive storybooks have integrated mini-games that are not only entertaining, but help move the story forward. As kids play, they actively experience what they are reading, bringing stories to life in a whole new way. In Disney Planes, children can extend the fun with three mini-games and a trip to racing school, where they can use the motion sensor on their LeapPad tablet to avoid obstacles while Dusty flies. Kids can also go behind-the-scenes for commentary from the race and learn more about Dusty's friends and rivals!
Learning Experts Create or Approve Every Experience
All LeapFrog educational games and interactive storybooks are created or approved by an in-house team of learning experts for the most effective, age-appropriate learning experience. Disney Planes features exciting learning activities designed by educators to boost reading comprehension, vocabulary skills, phonics skills, word recognition and early science skills. Vocabulary knowledge is closely linked to reading comprehension, and Disney Planes also includes a visual dictionary to help build early vocabulary skills. Children can tap highlighted words for a kid-friendly definition and see a simple animation that shows a word's meaning or how it's used in the story. The visual dictionary for Disney Planes includes many common sight words, which can't be sounded out but are frequently used across a wide range of contexts. Kids can also sound out other words letter by letter and interact with 10 "wow" words like plop, zoom and bang that pop up on the screen. The range of reading modes and text levels in Disney Planes, along with the sound-it-out feature and visual dictionary, are designed to support beginning readers as they build comprehension, phonics and word recognition skills, and to boost their reading and listening vocabulary, which contributes to their overall understanding of the text—the ultimate goal of reading instruction.
