Welcome to  Antiques & Moore!

This listing is for a lovely 19th Century English Regency black lacquered papier mache tray with gilt stylized flower design around interior border and gilt leaf and vine exterior border. The design is hand applied in gold leaf. Most of these trays were unmarked, however, this high quality tray is stamped with the trademark stamp of Clay & Co. manufacturers and is stamped "Clay, London". Henry Clay was based in Birmingham from 1770-1860 but opened a branch in London in 1785. The company was so acclaimed that their clients included the Royal Family, becoming "Japanner in Ordinary to His Majesty and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales".

Measures 1 1/4" high, 20 1/4" long and 15 3/4" wide. Weighs 1.8 pounds.

This nice tray is in very good to excellent Estate condition with no major flaws. The tray does have faint crazing on the interior and exterior flat surfaces although there are no open cracks. There are a couple of small nicks on the outside edge and wear to the gilded design from normal handling and wear commensurate with age.
