Costumes of the Barbarians, the enemies of the Romans:
THE ILLUSTRATIONS BELOW ARE by no means taken from the same period of history. They are representative of the warriors that that fought the Roman Empire: Celts and Gauls, Germans, Teutons, Slavs, Scythians, Finns and Tartars. There are also Asiatics - the Goths, Visigoths, Huns and Vandals who banded together at the time of the great invasion of the Barbarians from the North during the fourth ahd fifth centuries. Their repeated attacks brought about the fall of the old Western Empire, 500 years after the battle of Actium and 1,200 hundred years after Romulus. Yet Rome did not even exist at the time when some of the stone-age peoples pictured here first roamed European soil.
